• 2012 Vimeo Online Film Fest Winners -

The second Vimeo Film Festival honoring the best emerging talent creating original videos online was held in June in New York City.

The films were judged in thirteen categories.

    There were 14,567 entries!

In keeping with short attention spans on the web, the winning films ranged in length from 2:11 minutes (A HISTORY OF THE TITLE SEQUENCE) in the motion graphics category to 28:00 minutes (OFTEN AWESOME THE SERIES CATEGORY) in the series category.

“These films showcase the breadth of brilliant work online, from the humorous to the heart-wrenching, and prove that our beloved Internet has become a place where high-quality, high-impact content can not only survive, but thrive. We can’t wait to show you these stunning works, and we can’t wait to see what their creators do next.” (vimeo.com)

According to Jeremy Boxer, the Festival Director,

“We designed the program to focus on discovering the best new talent and to give that talent a platform that will catapult their careers to the next level. We are proud to reveal our new panel of esteemed judges.” (vimeo.com)

The 2012 panel of judges consisted of:

“…three … per category … actor and director James Franco; Parks and Recreation Star Aziz Ansari, 2012 Oscar Nominee Lucy Walker; Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood; Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright; snowboard superstar Travis Rice; Thierry Mugler and UNIQLO creative director Nicola Formichetti; Shelley Page of DreamWorks Animation; Barbara London of The Museum of Modern Art; advertising legend David Droga; and many more.” (vimeo.com)

The theme for the 2012 Festival was “The End of the Beginning”.

    About the theme, Vimeo.com writes,

“We feel that online video and creativity are transitioning from an age of wonder to an age of action.

Video has revealed itself to be a medium of incredible power and potential, and we are on the cusp of fulfilling the promises of the first act.

With all the amazing tools for fundraising, filming, editing, and distributing that have democratized the process of video-making, the barrier to entry has fallen, and so the Festival + Awards in 2012 this year was on making instead of talking.

This is a moment of empowerment and accessibility for all, and our goal with the Festival + Awards was to inspire people to create with purpose and take action on their ideas.
